Barber-Surgeon and Midwives purposes!
A barber- surgeon was a common medical practitioner that lived in the villages with many of the Medieval citizen. . He preformed many surgeries but simple surgeries. Some of the surgeries that a Barber Surgeon performed were extracting teeth, setting broken limbs, reticulating dislocated joints, and excising tumors and other skin lesions. They worked with military camps. They commonly performed amputations for soldiers by cutting of the limbs. That doesn't sound like the most promising job, now does it?! I'm sure it wasn't but it was a paying job and it did help the victim in need! But because the Barber- Surgeon reused the same tools for every patient, the majority of people had a spread of disease on them! That is not sanitary... Or friendly?!
Now the Midwive is another common Medical Practitioner. She performs Medical surgeries along with the Barber- Surgeon but some of the surgeries are different. For example one of the sergeries was to deleiver babys! Yay! Now that sounds like a fun job!(: Other than that, there was only one special/ huge surgery performance that was done by midwives... like i said it was delivering babys.

How diseases were treaded and how they were diagnosed.
A lot of the Medieval Time Doctors thought that the best way to diagnose a disease was through cleanliness. But because a lot of Europeans lacked hygiene ( Yuck!!) there were so many diseases, it was hard to diagnose everyone. Some people believed that if they had a disease, it was caused by a demon or a god trying to curse them... That's not weird!
The Opium Poppy Flower/ Plant. Helped to heal wounded. This is what the Medieval Times sleeping potion was made out of! |
Herbal Medicines were a source of most of the healing... Or so they thought! They thought that was the case until they realized that the majority of the herbal medicines weren't actually effective, except for a couple such as "Sleeping Potions," that were made from the Opium Poppy. It's not like anyone uses that stuff now... Or even knows what it is!
Death Toll in Medieval Times!
.The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% – 60% of Europe's population! That is A LOT of people! That is only from the Plague, imagine how nuch more of the population died just because of any other disease... Maybe if the Barber- Surgeon and the Midwive actually took care of their tools, and took care of themselfs, and patients then the death toll would most likely not be as high as it was in the 1300's.
It took about 150 years to repopulate... Woah! That is a long time! But eventually Europe recovered after having that huge downfall of the popululation. But the Plague did return at various times killing enourmous amounts of people

Causes of Sickness in Medieval Times.
Many Medieval people only reached aboput the age of 70. If you felt sick, there was a small chance that you were going to live. There was probably not many cures or remedys to keep those victims alive. One of the causes of a major sickness was because of rats. Some rats that carried diseases on them transferred to human body which causes them to get sick. This disease was called "The Plague," a.k.a. "The Black Death." Cool name right?! Sure, but the disease its self was not cool at all!
